Explore Desert Camping

Erg Chigaga

Our desert camping options are mostly located in Erg Chigaga. Most travelers venture to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga as it is relatively easy to access from Fez. Technically, however, Erg Chebbi is not in the Sahara but in the Pre-Sahara steppes. The Erg Chigaga dunes are smaller than Erg Chebbi but it makes up for it through its wildness – the desert around here is much less explored and gives travelers a sense that they are far removed from the rest of the world!

Although Erg Chigaga is more difficult to access than Erg Chebbi – the journey itself is an experience of a lifetime. The journey from Marrakesh will take around 9 hours, but the last 2 hours will be off-road via 4×4 where travelers will kiss goodbye to civilization in the small of M’hamid and embrace the Saharan wilderness.

The 9-hour journey can be broken down with overnight stops in Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley making the long drive less labor intensive while enjoying the grandeur of the ancient kasbahs on the way. Adventure seekers can choose to drive their own 4×4 via our guides in the nearest town of M’hamid.

Erg Chebbi

As a means to suit the needs of our guests, we have expanded our desert camp offerings to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga and Agafay near Marrakesh. For travelers who want to experience the highest dunes in the Saharan desert with relative ease of access – Erg Chebbi may be the location for you! Even though the dunes are still an 8 hours drive south of Fez, once you arrive in Merzouga a short camel ride is all it takes to get to the magnificent dunes!

Afagay

While most every guest that travels to Morocco would love to experience the vast expanse of the Sahara desert, we understand it is not always practical to make this journey. The Agafay Desert (stone desert) is 40 km southwest of Marrakesh and a short hop, skip and jump from the hustle and bustle of the Red City. While you won’t find the towering dunes in Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga – you will definitely capture a touch of the secluded desert experience while savoring the stunning view of the Atlas Mountains as a backdrop.
